Abstract: New Historicalism pays more attention on power conflicts and human nature. Its representative Stephen Greeblantt brought forward two concepts while discussing the social function of literature—“subversion”and “containment”. “Subversion” mainly refers to the rebellion against the dominating ideology of the society, while “Containment” mainly refers to the supression on the subversive power as well as the protection of the dominatiing ideology. Human nature is fully exhibited during the conflicts and counteracting exerted by these two powers. Starting from the perspective of new historical criticism, this article reveals to us the collision of these two powers in Moment in Peking through concrete examples, thus proceeding to give us a profound analysis of the beautiful and the ugly, the kind and the evil, the uncertain and the fluctuating in human nature.
