Abstract: In order to study how vague language applies in the news headlines on the internet, after classifying the number Hedges, two kinds of number hedges in Chinese and English news titles are studied and compared.Two conclusions are drawn: As all the network news is characterized by timeliness, authenticity, conciseness, Chinese and English news headlines can be translated into each other, and they have similarities in pragmatics.The number hedges in Chinese and English news headlines are different in structure, word order, varieties of vocabulary use and frequency.
