Abstract:

With the everincreasing demand for academic English, a variety of studies have been carried out with regard to NNS’ command of academic English This study concerns the differences of academic English in RA introductions by novice and expert writers Swales’ CARS model, A topdown approach, has been utilized to stratify the novice writers’ RA introduction corpus, called CUPT, and the expert writers’ RA introduction corpus, called TELECOM into 3 sections Then, in a bottomup way, the two corpora are compared with respect to their wordlist, ngram and phraseological frame As can be seen, CUPT displays an evident difference from TELECOM Technical jargons are favored by TELECOM in move 1 analysis, with the combined usage of adversative conjunctions and negative nouns by TELECOM in move 2 comparison Interestingly, both corpora exhibit a salient distribution of paper and section related ngrams, however, TELECOM possesses a much higher variety and frequency of those ngrams On the basis of the above analyses, it seems that Chinese novice writers have not fully grasped the clusters that correspond to the moves in CARS model though they have kind of perceived the ubiquity of moves in RA introduction
