With the everincreasing demand for academic English, a variety of studies have been carried out with regard to NNS’ command of academic English This study concerns the differences of academic English in RA introductions by novice and expert writers Swales’ CARS model, A topdown approach, has been utilized to stratify the novice writers’ RA introduction corpus, called CUPT, and the expert writers’ RA introduction corpus, called TELECOM into 3 sections Then, in a bottomup way, the two corpora are compared with respect to their wordlist, ngram and phraseological frame As can be seen, CUPT displays an evident difference from TELECOM Technical jargons are favored by TELECOM in move 1 analysis, with the combined usage of adversative conjunctions and negative nouns by TELECOM in move 2 comparison Interestingly, both corpora exhibit a salient distribution of paper and section related ngrams, however, TELECOM possesses a much higher variety and frequency of those ngrams On the basis of the above analyses, it seems that Chinese novice writers have not fully grasped the clusters that correspond to the moves in CARS model though they have kind of perceived the ubiquity of moves in RA introduction
